Newcastle United has finalized the acquisition of talented Dutch midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax. The 18-year-old has inked a five-year deal with the club at St James’ Park in Newcastle. Steur is the third major signing for Newcastle this summer, joining goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen and winger Bazoumana Toure.
Steur, who will sport the No. 14 jersey, expressed his excitement about playing in the English Premier League. He described the opportunity to join a prestigious club like Newcastle as a dream come true. Steur, who started his career at Ajax at the age of seven, expressed gratitude for his time at the club but couldn’t resist the allure of playing in the top-flight league in England.
Newcastle’s head coach, Eddie Howe, praised Steur’s potential and welcomed him to the team. Howe highlighted Steur’s experience in top-flight Dutch football and the Champions League, expressing confidence in the youngster’s ability to make a significant impact at Newcastle. He emphasized Steur’s qualities as an energetic player who is eager to contribute positively to the team.
Born in January 2008, Steur began his football journey at RKAV Volendam before moving to Ajax’s renowned academy in 2016. He made his debut for Jong Ajax at just 16 years old and later progressed to the senior team during the 2024-25 season. Steur’s impressive performances last season, including in the UEFA Champions League, where he made history as Ajax’s youngest player to provide an assist, earned him the prestigious Abdelhak Nouri Trophy for the club’s most promising academy player.
