The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Central Zone Bench in Bhopal, has initiated action regarding the severe air pollution in Khara village, Bikaner district, Rajasthan. Concerns arose when villagers started keeping children away from school due to the dangerous air quality. Justice Sheo Kumar Singh and Sudhir Kumar Chaturvedi issued an order emphasizing the environmental and public health risks in the area.
The Tribunal has directed the State of Rajasthan, the Rajasthan Pollution Control Board (RPCB), the District Education Officer, and the Principal Secretary (Environment) to respond to the pollution allegations. Additionally, a Joint Committee comprising representatives from the District Magistrate, Bikaner, and the Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board has been formed. This committee is tasked with assessing the pollution in Khara village and submitting a detailed action report within six weeks.
Scheduled for the next hearing on April 15, 2026, the case will review the committee’s findings and responses from the concerned authorities. The focus remains on the environmental degradation’s impact on public health, particularly children’s well-being. The NGT’s involvement aims to prompt urgent measures by state authorities to enhance air quality and protect the residents of Khara village.
