The National Highways Authority of India has implemented Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling at Gharaunda Toll Plaza on the Panipat–Jalandhar section of National Highway‑44. This system allows toll collection without vehicles stopping, ensuring quicker and more fuel-efficient journeys. Using advanced technology like FASTag, the MLFF system enables automatic vehicle identification and fee deduction for seamless travel at highway speeds.
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways views this development as a significant step towards achieving the Government of India’s vision of smooth, barrier-less, and technology-driven highway travel. User fees are collected automatically through overhead gantries with a minimum vertical clearance of 5.5 to 6 meters along the highway corridor. This approach aims to maintain uninterrupted movement for authorized vehicles.
The introduction of MLFF tolling will eliminate physical toll barriers, reducing waiting times and fuel consumption by avoiding frequent braking and acceleration at plazas. To ensure smooth traffic flow, strict enforcement measures have been put in place to prevent parking, encroachments, and unauthorized stoppages within 200 meters on both sides of the tolling zone. Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs) and local enforcement agencies will monitor MLFF stretches to deter violations such as wrong-side driving and toll evasion.
NHAI has implemented a structured e-Notice mechanism to address instances where toll payment through FASTag is unsuccessful. Users can manage e-Notices on the Parivahan website by entering their vehicle registration number and verifying with an OTP sent to their registered mobile number. The Rajmargyatra Mobile App also allows users to view e-Notices. Payment within 72 hours incurs the normal toll rate, doubling thereafter. Vehicle owners can dispute incorrectly issued e-Notices through the NIC portal within 72 hours for review and resolution.
