The National Health Mission (NHM) in Assam emphasized the difference between Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and Japanese Encephalitis (JE). NHM confirmed that Assam has reported 35 JE cases and seven related deaths this year. Reports combining AES and JE figures have caused confusion regarding the disease burden in the state.
Japanese Encephalitis is a contributor to AES, but not all AES cases are JE cases, according to NHM Assam. Separate reporting of these conditions is crucial for accurate public awareness. Data from the National Centre for Vector Borne Disease Control revealed 35 confirmed JE cases and seven deaths in Assam as of June 17, 2026.
NHM Assam cautioned against misinterpretation of figures, clarifying that 470 cases and 32 deaths reported are related to AES, not JE. The mission stressed the importance of distinguishing between AES and JE to prevent public misunderstanding. NHM officials highlighted the state’s readiness for the AES-JE season, urging accurate reporting to avoid misinformation and unnecessary alarm.
Efforts to enhance surveillance, case management, and vaccination coverage in vulnerable areas are underway. NHM Assam urged media outlets, stakeholders, and the public to rely on verified data and report AES and JE cases separately to prevent confusion and panic.
