The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has commenced its 12th annual short film competition to promote and safeguard human rights through creative cinematic endeavors. Entries are being accepted until June 30, with the results set to be announced through various platforms including a press release and the Commission’s website. Last year, the top prize winner received Rs 2 lakh.

Films submitted can be in English or any Indian language with English subtitles, ranging from 3 to 10 minutes. The NHRC specified that the themes should revolve around socio-economic, cultural, and political rights, encompassing various topics such as bonded labor, women and children’s rights, healthcare, and more. The films can be documentaries, real-life dramatizations, or fictional works in any technical format, including animation.

Participants are encouraged to address a wide array of issues in their films, such as human trafficking, domestic violence, police atrocities, and environmental hazards impacting life on earth. The NHRC emphasized that there are no restrictions on the number of entries an individual can submit, and there is no entry fee. Each film must be sent separately with a completed entry form for consideration in the competition.

The NHRC initiated the Short Film Awards competition in 2015 to recognize and promote the creative efforts of Indian citizens in advocating for human rights. The Commission reserves the right to utilize the awarded films for various purposes, with an undertaking required from the applicants. Participants retain their rights to their films and are free to engage in other competitions or festivals without limitations from the Commission.
