National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) member Priyank Kanoongo has called for action from the Telangana government following an incident where a class 2 student in a Hyderabad school was instructed by a teacher to recite the ‘Kalma’. The student was given this task as part of a homework assignment, leading to widespread social media circulation of the incident.
The school management took swift action by terminating the services of the teacher involved in assigning the task. NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo confirmed receiving a complaint from the ‘Seva Nyayasthan Foundation’ regarding the matter, emphasizing that such actions violate the Constitution of India.
Expressing concern over the incident, parents of the student raised objections with the school authorities upon learning about the attempt to make their child memorize Islamic religious texts. The community joined in protesting against what they deemed as inappropriate practices at the school, demanding accountability from the authorities involved.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) strongly condemned the incident, labeling it as an infringement on children’s rights and trust. VHP’s Vinod Bansal emphasized the need for schools to focus on imparting knowledge rather than imposing religious teachings on students, calling for strict action against those responsible.
