The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated action after reports emerged of caregivers mistreating toddlers at a daycare center within an IT company in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The NHRC has sought a detailed report from the Karnataka Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police within two weeks, considering the gravity of the situation. The incident was brought to light when a Child Helpline official received videos showing alleged mistreatment of children left at the facility by working parents.
The disturbing videos reportedly depicted caregivers engaging in abusive behavior such as placing toddlers in a washing machine, using a toilet jet spray to force water into their mouths, locking them in toilets, and other forms of mistreatment. In response to these reports, the daycare center has been temporarily shut down as a precautionary measure. The videos, which circulated on social media and were shared with the Child Welfare Committee, triggered swift action by authorities.
Capgemini, the company hosting the daycare facility, has temporarily closed the center, emphasizing the safety and well-being of its employees and their families as a top priority. The company is fully cooperating with authorities to ascertain the facts surrounding the alleged abuse. Following a police complaint, five caregivers have been named in the case and legal action has been initiated against them under relevant laws.
One of the accused caregivers has been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining individuals involved. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the matter thoroughly. Karnataka’s Home Minister has emphasized the government’s firm stance against crimes involving children and stressed the importance of daycare centers adhering to strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and conducting thorough background checks on staff.
Authorities are actively verifying the authenticity of the videos, examining CCTV footage, interviewing parents and witnesses, and gathering additional evidence to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the alleged abuse.
