The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has pressed charges against 11 individuals for their involvement in a terror plot linked to a faction of the banned Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) group. The accused face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P)A), 1967, as per an official statement by the NIA. These charges were filed in the NIA Special Court in Guwahati, Assam.
The NIA’s investigation uncovered the accused’s roles in a conspiracy associated with ‘Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK),’ a branch of JMB, aimed at spreading radical ideologies in West Bengal and northeastern states like Assam and Tripura. This scheme allegedly included radicalizing susceptible youth, disseminating extremist propaganda, and expanding the group’s reach in India.
According to the NIA, Imam Mahmud Habibullah, a senior JMB member, established IMK to further the banned organization’s interests in India. The accused individuals, as per the agency, conspired to bolster the presence of IMK/JBM in India through secretive meetings, religious indoctrination programs, distribution of extremist materials, and online platforms for anti-India messaging, pledging allegiance to IMK/JMB leadership.
The NIA highlighted two key figures among the accused: Nasimuddin, who allegedly led IMK activities in Assam, and Jagir Mia, responsible for the outfit’s operations in Tripura. During the probe, the NIA seized incriminating documents, electronic gadgets, and digital evidence crucial for building the case against the accused. The case, registered as RC-01/2026/NIA/GUW, is still under investigation.
