The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has added two more accused in the Assam Independence Day IED seizure case of 2024. Bhargab Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi were indicted under various sections of the IPC, Explosive Substance Act, and UA(P) Act in a supplementary charge sheet filed in a Special Court in Guwahati. This brings the total number of accused chargesheeted in the case to five, with the NIA having previously charged three others last year.
The newly named accused, both from Dibrugarh district of Assam, were arrested by the NIA in June 2025. The investigations revealed that these individuals provided terror funds to Jahnu Boruah, one of the previously charged accused who confessed to planting some of the seized IEDs. These IEDs were part of a protest and Independence Day boycott orchestrated by ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah.
Initially registered by Assam Police, the case pertained to ULFA (I) planning multiple IED blasts to wage war against the Government of India. The NIA took over the investigation in September 2024. In June 2025, three accused, including Paresh Baruah, Abhijit Gogoi, and Jahnu Boruah, were chargesheeted under various acts. ULFA-I recently claimed that Indian Army drones targeted their Eastern headquarters in Myanmar, resulting in casualties, a claim refuted by the Army.
