UEFA Champions League winner and five-time Bundesliga Champion Niklas Sule, aged 30, has surprisingly decided to retire following an injury scare that led him to reassess his future plans. The German International player will conclude his illustrious career at the end of the season upon the expiration of his contract with Borussia Dortmund.
Sule, a defender, disclosed his retirement plans on the Spielmacher podcast, revealing that the pivotal moment came after sustaining a knee injury against Hoffenheim in mid-April. Fearing it was his third cruciate ligament tear, the emotional impact of the potential injury weighed heavily on him.
Reflecting on the critical moment, Sule shared, “When I went for the MRI the next day and got the good news that it wasn’t a cruciate ligament tear, it was a thousand percent clear to me that it was over.” The defender expressed his inability to face the prospect of another arduous recovery process, prompting his decision to retire.
Throughout his career in club football, Sule has amassed a wealth of experience, featuring in 299 Bundesliga matches for Hoffenheim, Bayern Munich, and Dortmund. Despite his successes, recurring injuries, including two previous ACL tears, have plagued the towering center-back since his debut at 17 years old.
Having also represented Germany on 49 occasions, Sule participated in two World Cups and clinched the Confederations Cup in 2017 with the national team, marking a distinguished international career that now concludes with his retirement.
