Niti Aayog has introduced a strategic roadmap to boost the global presence of Ayurveda, emphasizing the potential for growth in healthcare, wellness products, and medical tourism. The traditional Indian system of medicine is gaining recognition globally, with formal acceptance in nearly 30 countries through various partnerships and inclusion in health policies.
The roadmap aims to address the uneven global expansion of Ayurveda by enhancing international acceptance and accessibility. It highlights the economic benefits of Ayurveda, including the expansion of markets for health products and wellness services. The study involved consultations with various stakeholders and is structured around three key pillars: Availability, Acceptability, and Propagation.
India boasts a robust Ayurveda ecosystem with over 355,000 trained practitioners, but the majority remain within the country. While Ayurvedic products are exported to 150 countries, regulatory constraints often limit their export as finished pharmaceutical products. International Ayurveda research is widespread, with collaborations in nearly 70 countries and initiatives to standardize Ayurveda curricula globally.
