Nawab Najaf Ali Khan, a descendant of the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, expressed strong disapproval of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP D. Arvind’s comments regarding the last ruler of Hyderabad State and the proposed renaming of Nizamabad district to Indur. Khan condemned the MP’s statements as disrespectful and unsuitable for a person holding a constitutional position. He emphasized that linking Nizam VII to the renaming issue shows either a lack of historical knowledge or intentional malice, both of which are unacceptable.
Khan highlighted the significant contributions of Nizam VII to various aspects such as humanity, governance, infrastructure, education, health, and social cohesion, which are well-documented and globally recognized. He underscored that Nizam VII’s rule from 1911 to 1947 is considered a golden era marked by peaceful coexistence among communities, known as ‘Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb,’ in contrast to the divisive narratives prevalent today. Khan refuted claims of tyranny or arbitrary rule by Nizam VII, stating that historical facts attest to his inclusive governance and the respect he commanded across society.
The Nizam’s grandson pointed out the transformation of Nizamabad under Nizam VII’s reign into a significant agricultural and industrial hub, citing achievements like the Nizam Sagar Dam and the Nizam Sugar Factory that contributed to economic growth and employment. Khan held successive governments responsible for any neglect or deterioration of these assets, emphasizing that historical figures should not be blamed for present-day administrative failures. He also addressed BJP MP Arvind’s recent statements about renaming Nizamabad district to Indur, emphasizing the historical significance of the region’s original name.
