The North Eastern Council (NEC) has approved more than Rs 13.58 crore for various development projects in Meghalaya between May and June this year. The funding covers sectors like healthcare, education, road infrastructure, renewable energy, and community development. One significant initiative includes installing a 1.5 Tesla MRI system at Tura Civil Hospital to enhance diagnostic facilities for patients in the Garo Hills region and nearby areas, reducing the need for out-of-state hospitals.
In the education sector, financial support has been extended for infrastructure development at Shillong Polytechnic. Additionally, the NEC has provided assistance for establishing a multidisciplinary training-cum-resource center by the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCORMS) to promote technical training, research, and innovation. The council has also allocated funds for projects focused on preserving Meghalaya’s cultural heritage, such as the development of the Seng Khasi Cultural Complex and the Seinraij Jowai Community Hall.
Furthermore, the NEC has approved funding for surveys and detailed investigations related to proposed hydroelectric projects like Mawblei, Myntdu Leshka Stage-II, and Selim to enhance Meghalaya’s renewable energy capacity in the future. The completion of the Shillong-Umroi Airport Road improvement project in June is expected to improve connectivity to the airport, facilitating smoother access and boosting tourism, trade, and economic activities in the region.
Apart from state-specific projects, the NEC has disbursed Rs 18.93 crore to various institutions across the Northeast for research, academic, and community initiatives, including programs in Meghalaya.
