North Korea has commissioned a new 5,000-ton destroyer, with leader Kim Jong-un expressing confidence that the Navy’s combat capabilities will reach unprecedented levels. The commissioning ceremony for the “new-type multi-mission” destroyer Choe Hyon took place at the western port of Nampho. Kim emphasized the significant enhancement of the country’s naval power through the unveiling of the warship last year.
The Choe Hyon, which North Korea has been testing in recent months, was praised by Kim for its advanced operational and combat capabilities. Kim highlighted the transformation of the North Korean navy from its previous status as the weakest military branch. Describing the deployment of the destroyer as strategically crucial, Kim emphasized its role in strengthening the country’s nuclear deterrent and enhancing the operation of its nuclear forces.
Named after an anti-Japanese revolutionary fighter, Choe Hyon will join the West Sea Fleet of the Navy to defend the West Sea and deter war. Kim outlined plans for further naval development, including the construction of two Choe Hyon-class or larger surface combatants annually. This initiative is part of North Korea’s five-year defense development plan, which aims to bolster its naval capabilities significantly.
Analysts suggest that the deployment of the Choe Hyon reflects Pyongyang’s efforts to increase military pressure on South Korea as part of its “two hostile states policy.” The warship’s design changes since its launch ceremony last year indicate a potential shift towards equipping it with cruise missiles. While North Korea claims indigenous technology in building the vessel, similarities to Russia’s naval air defense system have raised suspicions of possible Russian assistance.
