North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has solidified his power base during the recent party congress, marking the beginning of what is being termed as the “Kim Jong-un era.” This ninth party congress saw Kim reelected as the general secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, emphasizing the country’s nuclear deterrence efforts under his leadership.
The ministry noted a significant shift in Kim Jong-un’s approach, with the omission of traditional deference towards past leaders in his speeches. North Korea highlighted Kim’s achievements, surpassing those of his predecessors, showcasing a focus on his leadership and accomplishments.
During the congress, approximately half of the party officials in the central leadership were replaced, seen as a strategic move to prioritize performance-based reshuffling. The party elected new members to its central committee, indicating a shift towards a younger leadership generation, with notable exclusions like Choe Ryong-hae, signaling a significant change in leadership dynamics.
Since coming to power in 2011, Kim has emphasized the need to strengthen North Korea’s economy, alongside maintaining a focus on military capabilities.
