North Korean leader Kim Jong-un supervised tests of strategic cruise missiles and other weapons from a newly built 5,000-tonne naval destroyer. He directed the warship to be inducted into the Navy within two months. The tests, including cruise missiles, naval artillery, and electronic warfare means, were observed by Kim on Friday.
In June last year, North Korea launched the destroyer, which had previously capsized during its initial launch attempt. South Korea’s military reported the North’s firing of cruise weapons from the warship towards the East Sea on Friday. Seoul and Washington are currently analyzing the details of the tests.
The recent weapons trials aimed to assess the capability of applying various weapon systems on board the destroyer during combat. Kim emphasized the need to enhance the country’s war deterrent and warfighting capabilities. He instructed the completion of the destroyer’s trial process responsibly and its commissioning for the Navy within two months.
Kim also presided over a significant consultative meeting for the development of the warship building industry. Experts believe that the recently launched missiles are likely from the Hwasal-series cruise missiles, indicating North Korea’s intention to equip its new destroyers with such weaponry. The reference to “strategic” weapons suggests a potential nuclear capability.
Last month, North Korea commissioned another 5,000-tonne destroyer, named the Choe Hyon, for defending the West Sea and deterring war. Analysts suggest that North Korea may aim to commission the Kang Kon destroyer around the 78th founding anniversary of the government on September 9.
