The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making significant progress in green energy and sustainability by installing solar power systems. Since the start of the solarization initiative in 2011, NFR has installed a total solar capacity of 31.890 MWp by February 2026. In the current fiscal year 2025–26, an additional 22.734 MWp capacity has been added, emphasizing the railway’s commitment to renewable energy.
Lumding division, including Guwahati, leads in solar installation with 13.334 MWp, followed by Rangiya division with 8.941 MWp. Alipurduar, Katihar, and Tinsukia divisions have also significantly contributed to increasing solar capacity. The solar installations have brought operational benefits, generating an average of about 9.18 lakh units of solar energy per month, resulting in monthly savings of approximately Rs 68.80 lakh.
NFR is further expanding its green energy portfolio with 19.14 MWp of additional solar capacity in progress across divisions. Future installations in Lumding, Rangiya, Katihar, and Alipurduar divisions will boost renewable energy capacity. These efforts highlight NFR’s dedication to sustainable development and its support for Indian Railways’ goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
