Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the Northeast’s potential to become India’s growth hub by focusing on organic farming and premium produce. She inaugurated the region’s largest organic spice processing plant in Meghalaya, emphasizing the importance of quality over quantity in agriculture. The plant, run by the Eastern Ri-Bhoi Organic Farmer Producer Company Limited, aims to enhance value addition for crops like Lakadong turmeric and ginger.
Sitharaman stressed the shift towards producing high-quality, traceable, and trusted agricultural products for future sustainability. She praised Meghalaya for its eco-friendly farming practices, stating that global consumers now prefer ethically produced food. The Finance Minister underlined the significance of trust in international markets and how Meghalaya’s traditional farming methods align with this demand.
The Finance Minister called for a balance between economic growth and environmental conservation, advocating for harmonious coexistence with nature. She tied India’s development vision to regional participation, with the Northeast playing a crucial role. Sitharaman also emphasized empowering farmers, especially women, through value addition and access to global markets to establish the region’s organic brands on a global scale.
