The Northeast Monsoon season in Tamil Nadu, which typically runs from October to December, is approaching its end, with the state receiving nearly its usual rainfall for the season. The Meteorological Department has indicated that the monsoon, which commenced in October, is now in its final stages, with just a few days left before its official withdrawal.
This year, the Northeast Monsoon brought widespread rainfall to Tamil Nadu, significantly benefiting the state. The impact of Cyclone Ditwah played a vital role in increasing rainfall, especially in the delta districts and parts of northern Tamil Nadu. Chennai and its surrounding areas also saw substantial rainfall during the season.
From October 1 till now, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry together have received approximately 42.8 cm of rainfall, close to the normal seasonal average of 43.7 cm, indicating that the state has nearly met its expected monsoon rainfall. With a couple of days remaining in the season, meteorologists suggest the potential for light rainfall activity, although changing wind patterns are starting to affect weather conditions in the region.
Due to variations in easterly winds, a gradual shift towards drier weather is being observed. Dry weather is forecasted to prevail across most parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Sunday, with the possibility of early morning mist or light fog in some areas. On Monday, isolated locations in the delta districts and the Karaikal region may experience light to moderate rainfall, while the rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to remain generally dry.
Looking ahead to Tuesday, isolated places in southern Tamil Nadu, the delta districts, and Karaikal may see light to moderate rainfall, while other parts of the state, including northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, are likely to stay dry. The Meteorological Department has mentioned that on December 31 and January 1, light to moderate rainfall could occur in isolated spots in southern Tamil Nadu, while the northern districts, Puducherry, and Karaikal are anticipated to continue having mostly dry weather. As the Northeast Monsoon wraps up, attention now shifts to stable winter weather conditions in the state, with rainfall activity expected to gradually decrease in the upcoming days.
