The Meteorological office has predicted Nor’wester storms for Kolkata and various districts in south Bengal starting Sunday. Stormy conditions with rain are anticipated in parts of south Bengal from Saturday evening, with alerts issued for multiple districts including North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, and Nadia. Kolkata is also expected to experience stormy weather and rainfall beginning Sunday.
A Nor’wester forecast is in place for all south Bengal districts, including Kolkata, from Sunday to next Friday. During this period, rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds at 40 to 50 kmph are expected. The storms may be more severe in certain districts, with wind speeds possibly reaching 50 to 60 kmph in various areas.
Gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely over the sea, prompting advisories for fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea off the West Bengal and north Odisha coasts until Tuesday. In north Bengal, heavy rainfall is expected in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, with other districts likely to receive light to moderate rain and gusty winds. An orange alert has been issued for these northern districts, with such weather conditions expected to persist until next Friday.
Temperatures across the state are projected to decrease by three to four degrees Celsius over the next five days. A meteorological official attributed the favorable conditions for thunderstorms in West Bengal to a weather axis extending from eastern Uttar Pradesh to southern Bangladesh, passing over Bihar and Jharkhand. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation over Uttar Pradesh and nearby regions has facilitated the influx of water vapor from the Bay of Bengal into the land.
On Saturday morning, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 27.8 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal, following a maximum temperature of 36 degrees Celsius on Friday, just above the normal range.
