Novak Djokovic is set to return to ATP Tour action at the Italian Open this week, making his first appearance since the Indian Wells Masters in March. The six-time Rome champion is back after dealing with injury issues that affected his schedule. While Djokovic admitted he is still working on his form, he is eager to compete at a venue where he has had significant success.
“I am ready enough to compete,” Djokovic stated before his opening match in Rome. Despite not being completely satisfied with his tennis level or physical condition, he expressed excitement about returning to competition. Djokovic emphasized his love for Rome and the enthusiasm he feels about competing there.
With a remarkable 68-12 record in Rome and six title wins, Djokovic considers the tournament one of the most iconic stops in tennis. He praised the event’s atmosphere, referring to it as the “tennis colosseum” due to the high number of spectators and the historic beauty of the venue. Djokovic acknowledged the growing popularity of the tournament, especially with the recent success of Italian players.
Starting the year strongly with a Grand Slam final appearance at the Australian Open, Djokovic faced a setback at Indian Wells with a fourth-round defeat. The 40-time ATP Masters 1000 winner will kick off his Rome campaign against Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic. Djokovic could potentially meet Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-finals, while world No. 1 Jannik Sinner is in the opposite draw.
