Nuno Borges secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the Nordea Open in Bastad by defeating Grigor Dimitrov with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the second round. This win marks Borges’ fourth tour-level quarterfinal appearance this season. Borges, who previously won his only ATP Tour title in Bastad in 2024 by defeating Rafael Nadal, showcased a strong performance against Dimitrov.
Dimitrov, competing in the ATP 250 clay-court event for the first time since 2013, demonstrated sportsmanship in his earlier match against Dalibor Svrcina. However, Borges outmaneuvered Dimitrov in baseline exchanges and capitalized on the Bulgarian’s second serve, winning 67% of points to lead 2-1 in their ATP head-to-head series. Borges, aged 29, will face the winner between defending champion Luciano Darderi and Daniel Altmaier in his pursuit of a second semifinal this season.
Adolfo Daniel Vallejo made history by becoming the first Paraguayan to reach a tour-level quarterfinal since 2006, after defeating Botic van de Zandschulp in a tough match lasting nearly three hours. Vallejo, currently ranked No. 65 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, will next challenge either Mariano Navone or Stefano Travaglia. Meanwhile, Dimitrov continued his strong form at the Nordea Open, advancing to the second round after a hard-fought victory over Dalibor Svrcina.
Dimitrov, who recently excelled at Wimbledon, showcased his adaptability on clay in Bastad, where he had previous success in 2012 and 2013. Despite facing challenges during his matches, Dimitrov managed to secure wins and progress in the tournament. His next opponent will be Nuno Borges, the fifth seed and 2024 Bastad champion, setting the stage for an exciting match between the two talented players.
