Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has taken a tough stance against government doctors who have been absent from duty for over five years, impacting patient care. A total of 128 Medical Officers and Dental Surgeons across government healthcare institutions in the state have been identified for prolonged absenteeism. The Chief Minister has instructed the Health and Family Welfare Department to initiate disciplinary actions against these medical professionals.
In a separate development, the Chief Minister has directed the dismissal of Bichakshana Panigrahi, a former Medical Officer at the Kandhamal Police Hospital, due to unauthorized absence since 2012. Despite repeated notices to explain her absence and return to duty, Panigrahi did not comply, leading to her removal from government service. The decision was made based on her neglect of professional duties and patient care responsibilities.
Emphasizing the importance of accountability in the healthcare sector, Chief Minister Majhi highlighted the government’s efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure and medical education. He expressed zero tolerance for doctors who remain absent after being appointed, stating that such behavior will not be tolerated. This action comes amidst a critical shortage of medical professionals in Odisha’s public healthcare system, especially in rural and remote areas.
