Odisha emerged victorious in both the men’s and women’s hockey events at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 in Raipur. The men’s team secured a 4-1 win against Jharkhand, while the women’s team narrowly defeated Mizoram 1-0 in the finals. Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh claimed silver and bronze respectively in the men’s category, with Jharkhand also securing a bronze in the women’s event.

The success of Odisha in men’s and women’s hockey at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 not only signifies sporting achievements but also highlights the transformative impact of the game in tribal regions. Mizoram also showcased its talent by progressing to the knockout rounds at the event. The competition demonstrated the growing prowess of northeastern states in hockey.

Hockey holds deep cultural roots in tribal communities, with children traditionally playing the sport using makeshift equipment. However, with improved infrastructure and training programs, the talent is now being nurtured effectively. The establishment of Centres of Excellence and grassroots initiatives is fostering a robust ecosystem for hockey development.

Former Olympian Ajit Lakhra, now a coach, emphasized the strengthening of the hockey system from grassroots to senior levels. He noted the significant benefits that athletes from tribal regions are reaping through structured support and training. The rise of new players from these areas is creating a positive ripple effect in the sport.

The Khelo India Tribal Games are not just about medals but also about the broader impact on communities. Sports, particularly hockey, are playing a pivotal role in uniting regions and empowering individuals. Initiatives like the ASMITA program are promoting inclusivity, especially for women players, in the sporting landscape. The grassroots tournaments are instrumental in nurturing talent and fostering national representation.

Former Olympian Manohar Topno praised the impact of grassroots initiatives like the Khelo India Tribal Games in uplifting tribal communities. He highlighted the natural affinity of tribal regions towards hockey and emphasized the potential for these players to excel at the national level. The integration of sports science and advanced coaching is propelling tribal athletes towards higher achievements.

Asrita Lakra, a former athlete, acknowledged the deep-rooted passion for hockey among tribal youth and the role of platforms like Khelo India in channeling their talent. The improved facilities, training, and exposure are elevating the performance levels of players, enabling them to compete at the national stage. Tribal athletes are transitioning from participants to serious contenders, reflecting a positive evolution in Indian hockey.

The recent success of Odisha in the Khelo India Tribal Games signifies a broader movement where rural areas are becoming centers of sporting excellence. The journey of these athletes, from local fields to national stadiums, is reshaping the landscape of Indian hockey and inspiring a new generation of players with big dreams.
