Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized the significance of seas as gateways to opportunities and economic growth during the 14th Multi-Agency Maritime Security Group Meeting in Bhubaneswar. He highlighted India’s emergence as a major maritime power and the importance of maritime security for national development and coastal residents’ welfare. The Chief Minister praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cooperative Federalism approach by hosting the meeting outside New Delhi for the first time.
Majhi underscored the value of oceans, ports, fisheries, and the Blue Economy as national assets crucial for security and economic progress. He mentioned the diverse challenges of maritime security, including infrastructure protection, cybersecurity, disaster management, and environmental conservation. Odisha’s historical maritime heritage and its role in India’s maritime development were also highlighted by the Chief Minister.
The state’s coastline along the Bay of Bengal and its historical trade connections with Southeast Asian countries were emphasized. Odisha’s current efforts to enhance its maritime position through the development of a deep-sea port in Ganjam and a shipbuilding cluster near Paradip were mentioned. The Chief Minister expressed support for national initiatives like SAGAR, Act East Policy, BIMSTEC, and Coastal Security Scheme Phase-III to strengthen maritime security.
Majhi advocated for the use of advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence and unmanned systems in maritime security. He discussed specific measures such as installing NABHMITRA transponders on fishing boats and implementing the Coastal Vibrant Village Programme. The Chief Minister commended the collaborative efforts of the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Odisha Police, and other agencies in safeguarding maritime borders.
National Maritime Security Coordinator Biswajit Dasgupta highlighted the need for a strategic framework incorporating multiple models for maritime security. He mentioned the initiatives of the National Maritime Security Office in New Delhi to raise awareness and provide guidance to coastal states on maritime security matters.
