The Odisha Higher Education Department has released a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Heat Wave Management in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the state as part of its summer preparedness measures. The directive aims to ensure the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff by implementing precautionary measures to combat heatwave conditions. Colleges and universities are advised to schedule classes, assessments, and exams in the morning to minimize students’ exposure to extreme heat.
Outdoor academic, sports, and co-curricular activities are restricted during peak afternoon hours, with necessary precautions to be taken if unavoidable. The institutions are required to provide safe drinking water at various points on campus and maintain stocks of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) for easy access. Moreover, regular inspection and maintenance of water facilities are mandated to prevent any disruptions during the summer.
Institutions must have first aid facilities readily available to address heat-related issues and other medical emergencies promptly. Heads of Institutions are tasked with educating students, faculty, and staff on heatwave precautionary measures, emphasizing hydration, early symptom recognition, and appropriate actions during extreme heat. Parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure students carry water to classes and exams.
A letter has been circulated to all State Public and Private Universities and Degree Colleges under the Higher Education Department, emphasizing strict compliance with the issued guidelines.
