In response to the ongoing heatwave, the Odisha Works Department has instructed that laborers should not work outdoors between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The Engineer-in-Chief of the Works Department has communicated this directive to construction engineers and superintending engineers in various zones of the state. The state government had previously prohibited outdoor work during peak heat hours due to severe summer conditions in Odisha.
The Works Department has observed that some workers are still being engaged in outdoor activities during the restricted period at certain locations. Consequently, all contractors have been directed to suspend work during the prohibited hours and ensure laborers’ well-being by providing shaded rest sheds, drinking water, and first-aid facilities at worksites. Field-level officials are tasked with raising awareness among contractors and workers to prevent heat-related incidents.
Odisha is experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with several places in the state recording temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. Titlagarh registered the highest temperature at 45.8 degrees Celsius, followed by Boudh, Bhawanipatna, and Sambalpur. The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued heatwave conditions in Odisha, with temperatures expected to remain above normal until May 28. An Orange Warning has been issued for isolated districts, including Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Balangir, and Boudh, for the next five days.
