Kolkata, Aug 9 (IANS) The Kolkata police have arrested a person for indulging in extortion in the name of West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Samik Bhattacharya, police said on Sunday.

The accused was arrested after a complaint was filed in Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station.

The State BJP President himself informed about the development on Sunday.

Speaking at an event, Bhattacharya said, “It came to my notice that a real estate company was being extorted in my name. It was reported that people are calling in my name to collect money from the company. A letter has been sent to the company with my signature, name and title. I don’t know how they did it, I complained to the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime and was asked to look into the matter. I came to know that someone from Jalpaiguri district had planned to extort money from a real estate company in my name. The police have launched an investigation and arrested one person from Salkia in Howrah district.”

Recently, the State BJP Chief said that it would take some time for the BJP-led state government to completely stop extortion in the state.

He also warned the BJP workers of getting involved in illegal activities such as indulging in extortion and asserted that action will be taken against them if any allegations of corruption are raised.

The State BJP President also gave a message to the party workers and leaders to come out of the shadow of party politics which prevailed during the previous Left Front and Trinamool Congress governments.

A few days ago, the state BJP had given responsibility to district observers to find out those who are involved in extortion syndicates and those who are engaged in anti-party activities within the party.

The state BJP leadership also gave a message that the party’s district president and the MLAs of the Kolkata district in dealing with allegations of extortion by BJP leaders and workers.

In many cases, the state BJP leadership has received reports that the three leaders — the district president, general secretary and MLA — are not coordinating with each other.

The top BJP leadership has said that the party needs to be purified by maintaining that coordination and adopt a zero-tolerance policy against extortion.
