OpenAI is set to undergo a major transformation of its ChatGPT platform, aiming to turn it into a versatile “superapp” by incorporating coding tools, AI agents, and partner services. This strategic move is part of OpenAI’s efforts to target lucrative enterprise clients and enhance revenue growth in anticipation of a potential stock market debut. The restructuring also involves a shift towards emphasizing its coding product Codex, with the rollout of these changes expected in the near future.
According to a report by the Financial Times, the upcoming overhaul at OpenAI will elevate the role of Codex within ChatGPT and is scheduled to be implemented in the upcoming weeks. The revamped interface of ChatGPT will actively guide users towards specific functionalities such as coding features, image generation, and integrated partner services like Canva and Booking.com.
The Financial Times highlighted that a significant portion of Codex users are paid subscribers, with approximately 2 million business clients currently contributing nearly 40% of OpenAI’s total revenue. This proportion is projected to increase to around 50% by the year-end, indicating a substantial reliance on commercial users for revenue generation.
The latest initiative by OpenAI comes amidst its continuous expansion in the commercial realm. Previous reports suggested that the company was gearing up for a confidential filing for a U.S. initial public offering, although the final decision on the IPO timing remains contingent on broader strategic considerations. The reported revamp underscores OpenAI’s strategic pivot to transform ChatGPT from a conversational AI tool into a comprehensive platform integrating productivity tools, coding capabilities, and third-party services under one ecosystem.
