US-based artificial intelligence company OpenAI reported that its AI coding and productivity tool Codex is gaining momentum in India, with a 27-fold increase in weekly active users since the start of 2026. The company revealed this information during Mumbai Tech Week, highlighting India’s position among the top five countries globally for Codex adoption and top 10 for platform engagement.
By late April, daily interactions with Codex in India had surged more than 20 times compared to the beginning of the year. Notably, a significant portion of Codex usage in India now extends beyond traditional software development tasks, with over a quarter of requests focusing on non-coding activities like information synthesis, document drafting, and task automation.
OpenAI shared that Indian users are leveraging Codex for a variety of purposes, including research automation, workflow organization, and communication management. The company emphasized that the tool’s utility has expanded beyond coding-related functions, catering to a diverse user base ranging from software engineers to business professionals.
Thomas Jeng, Head of Startups – APAC at OpenAI, expressed enthusiasm about the broad adoption of Codex in India, noting its appeal to a wide spectrum of users beyond just software engineers. While initially designed for coding tasks, Codex has evolved into a versatile tool facilitating swift idea implementation across various work domains.
The surge in Codex adoption in India is attributed to the country’s growing builder community and increasing demand from enterprises, reflecting a shift towards AI-driven productivity tools in the Indian market.
