A dispute arose between opposition leaders and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the Centre’s issuance of new guidelines for the National Song and National Anthem. The Opposition contended that the government cannot enforce anything forcibly and suggested focusing on education instead. On the contrary, BJP leaders supported the directive.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) instructed all Central government offices and Governors’ offices to ensure strict adherence to the prescribed script, text, diction, and pronunciation when singing or playing the National Song and the National Anthem. These guidelines reiterate the protocols for their use at official functions nationwide.
NCP-SP national spokesperson Naseem Siddiqui expressed that the government should not impose anything on citizens against their will. He highlighted that Muslims, due to their religious beliefs, may not recite ‘Vande Mataram’ but can show respect by standing during the national song. Congress MP Imran Masood emphasized the importance of education over such directives.
Congress leader Rakesh Sinha emphasized the inherent respect every Indian has for the national anthem and song, stating that guidelines are unnecessary as citizens already hold them in high regard. He questioned the need for a specific sequence between the national song and anthem.
BJP MP Tarun Chugh welcomed the government’s move, stating that it strengthens respect for national symbols, representing unity, integrity, and national pride. BJP MP Dinesh Sharma supported the decision, emphasizing the responsibility of individuals and establishments to sing the national symbols correctly. BJP leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain advocated for the loud and respectful singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ as the primary directive.
