Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka has lauded the Union Cabinet’s decision to raise the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane to Rs 365 per quintal for the 2026–27 season, calling it a significant relief for farmers. This move is expected to benefit approximately 8 to 10 lakh sugarcane growers in Karnataka and about 5 crore farmers nationwide. Ashoka emphasized that this decision marks a historic advancement that will boost farmers’ earnings and fortify the agricultural domain.
Ashoka criticized the Congress-led Karnataka government, alleging its failure to fulfill commitments made to sugarcane farmers. He highlighted that despite the state government’s pledge last year to provide an additional Rs 100 per quintal for sugarcane, it did not disburse even its share of Rs 50, let alone secure the remaining Rs 50 from sugar mills. Accusing the state administration of pursuing policies detrimental to farmers and delivering on “hollow promises,” Ashoka contrasted the delayed payments in the state with the Union government’s consistent efforts, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to augment farmers’ incomes.
Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi, addressing the media, disclosed the government’s extended backing for sugarcane cultivators by endorsing the FRP hike. Joshi highlighted that the Union Cabinet, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, sanctioned an FRP of Rs 365 per quintal for sugarcane in the upcoming season, based on a recovery rate of 10.25 percent. This decision is anticipated to benefit approximately 8 to 10 lakh farmers in Karnataka.
Joshi further mentioned that an additional incentive of Rs 3.56 per quintal will be granted for every 0.1 percent increase in recovery. Even if the recovery rate falls to 9.5 percent or lower, farmers will receive a minimum support price of Rs 338.3 per quintal without any deductions. The move is likely to aid nearly 5 crore sugarcane farmers and their families nationwide, with Karnataka alone accounting for around 8 lakh farmers. Additionally, Joshi emphasized that this initiative will not only support farmers but also prove advantageous for sugar mills and over 5 lakh workers employed in the sugar industry. The elevation in FRP underscores the government’s dedication to fortifying both the agricultural sector and the sugar industry.
