Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, expressed support for former Trinamool Congress treasurer Aroop Biswas, who requested a private bank to freeze the party’s bank accounts. Banerjee highlighted concerns about possible misappropriated funds in the accounts, backing the call for freezing them.
Banerjee’s stance is seen as an attempt to solidify his position as the authentic Trinamool Congress leader, especially after a significant number of MLAs rebelled against the party’s leadership. The move comes following Biswas’ plea to the bank to halt operations in the party’s account amid internal leadership disputes.
Former treasurer Aroop Biswas urged the bank to suspend withdrawals and maintain the account status quo until the leadership conflict within the party is resolved. The development is significant as the party recently underwent organizational changes post its electoral loss, appointing a new treasurer in place of Biswas.
The Trinamool Congress holds a substantial amount of Rs 675 crore in deposits in its account at a private bank’s Central Plaza branch, as per the party’s audit report submitted to the Election Commission. Despite the dated letter from Biswas requesting the freeze, it was officially received by the bank four days later.
