Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, expressed skepticism regarding the accuracy of exit polls in predicting election outcomes. Saikia, also a Congress candidate, highlighted past instances where exit poll predictions failed to align with actual results, emphasizing the unpredictability of voter behavior. He cited the recent West Bengal elections as an example where initial projections significantly differed from the final outcome.
Saikia noted that the current political climate in Assam suggests a departure from previous patterns, with many voters maintaining secrecy about their voting preferences. This secrecy, he suggested, could indicate an underlying shift in public sentiment towards a change in leadership. The opposition leader further suggested that factors like governance issues and anti-incumbency sentiments might impact the ruling party’s performance in the elections.
Saikia expressed confidence in his party’s chances, emphasizing the importance of “silent voters” whose preferences often emerge only during the actual counting process. He anticipated that the final election results could diverge significantly from the trends indicated by exit polls.
