Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, has raised doubts about the reported attack on Health Minister Veena George at Kannur railway station by the Kerala Students Union (KSU). Satheesan stated that a preliminary investigation by the Congress did not find any evidence of a physical assault. He emphasized that no protester had come close to the Minister during the incident, which involved a small group of police officials and KSU workers.
Satheesan mentioned that a more detailed inquiry would be conducted by the party, with a promise of strict action if any Congress member was found responsible. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan visited George at the Kannur District Hospital, where she was being treated for injuries to her neck and hand. The CPI(M) has accused the Congress of orchestrating the alleged assault, labeling it a “planned attack.”
The CPI(M) alleged that the Congress leadership was aware of the attack, while local leaders expressed shock over a female Minister being targeted in the state. Party supporters staged protests in Kannur denouncing the incident, although the KSU denied any involvement in the alleged assault. State officials maintained that activists only raised slogans and did not physically harm the Minister, challenging authorities to provide evidence to the contrary.
Amid conflicting claims and without definitive video evidence, attention has turned to the role of the police at the station and the potential political implications of the incident in Kerala, which is gearing up for elections.
