A day before the Assembly session, Partap Singh Bajwa, the Leader of the Opposition in Punjab, penned a letter to Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, expressing worries about the substitution of regular legislative sessions with specially curated ones. Bajwa highlighted a significant reduction in the number of House sittings, calling it a serious threat to legislative democracy.
He criticized the Punjab government for organizing a special one-day session of the Vidhan Sabha on December 30 to discuss the new rural employment law, VB-G RAM G, which replaces the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. Bajwa emphasized the importance of the Vidhan Sabha in questioning and holding the executive accountable, stating that the shift to special sessions undermines the legislature’s role.
Bajwa pointed out that the current trend of replacing regular sessions with special ones is diminishing legislative time and evading scrutiny, turning the House into a staged event rather than a platform for democratic accountability. He expressed concern over the lack of meaningful debates and emphasized the need for continuous and serious sessions to address Punjab’s pressing issues.
