A day after Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra faced protests with eggs and cow dung thrown at her by a mob in West Bengal’s Nadia district, opposition leaders criticized BJP workers for engaging in “hooliganism” and labeled it as an “assault on democracy.” Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy emphasized the need for intervention by the Central government and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in the incident. He highlighted the attack on Moitra while she was visiting her constituency, Krishnanagar Lok Sabha, and criticized the passive police response.
Trinamool MP Sagarika Ghose described the assault on Mahua Moitra as a direct threat to democracy, emphasizing Moitra’s right as an elected Member of Parliament to visit her constituency. Congress leader Surendra Rajput expressed concern over the attack, stating that BJP members had targeted Moitra’s office with eggs and warned of potential escalation to more violent means. Rajput called for the Centre’s intervention in such incidents and suggested the imposition of President’s rule if the state government failed to maintain law and order in Bengal.
Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Jha condemned the attack, mentioning the use of not only eggs but also stones. He criticized the deteriorating political environment where losing parties face such assaults, urging BJP leaders to exhibit restraint and avoid aggression. In contrast, BJP MP Manan Kumar Mishra attributed the public’s resentment towards Trinamool Congress to the party’s actions. Mishra claimed that the police do act to prevent such occurrences and accused Trinamool of exaggerating minor incidents through irresponsible statements.
