In a move to bolster opposition unity for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, the Indian National Congress and Raijor Dal have reached an agreement on seat-sharing. Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi, will contest in 11 constituencies, including Sivasagar, Dalgaon, and Tezpur, as per the deal. This collaboration is aimed at consolidating anti-BJP votes in the state.
The two parties have also decided on “friendly contests” in Goalpara East and Gauripur constituencies, where candidates from both Congress and Raijor Dal will participate. This development is part of broader efforts by opposition parties in Assam to form a united front against the ruling BJP in the upcoming polls.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi emphasized the need for opposition parties to unite to offer a credible alternative to the current government. The Congress is actively engaging in discussions with Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), CPI(M), and CPI(Marxist-Leninist) Liberation for alliances and seat-sharing arrangements.
Gogoi called for like-minded parties to join forces, stating that a united opposition would be better equipped to challenge the government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma. The proposed alliance aims to promote inclusive development, protect land rights, and strive towards a “new Assam.” The Congress-Raijor Dal pact is expected to influence electoral dynamics, especially in Upper Assam, where both parties hold significant sway.
