Outgoing Bank of Korea Governor Rhee Chang-yong emphasized the increasing difficulty of achieving economic stability and growth solely through monetary and fiscal policies. Speaking at his farewell ceremony in Seoul after completing his four-year term, Rhee highlighted the need for the central bank to tackle long-term structural challenges. He expressed concerns about the widening gap between public expectations and the actual impact of policies in the face of evolving economic structures.
Governor Rhee pointed out that while recent economic conditions seemed stable due to the semiconductor boom, underlying issues like industry reliance and polarization persisted. He urged the Bank of Korea to transcend traditional roles and become a leading think tank by addressing structural issues such as education, housing, regional development, youth employment, and elderly poverty. Rhee stressed the importance of continuous structural reforms to adapt to changing economic landscapes.
Reflecting on his tenure, Rhee credited the Bank of Korea for effectively responding to unforeseen shocks and achieving milestones like maintaining inflation within the 2 percent range ahead of other major central banks. He also highlighted the bank’s role in global financial systems and its focus on structural reform through various reports. Rhee emphasized the significance of competence in building public trust in the central bank and encouraged setting ambitious goals for future progress.
When asked about his post-retirement plans, Rhee mentioned his intention to continue as an economic commentator and adviser, declining immediate offers for university professorships. Dismissing reports about launching a personal YouTube channel as taken out of context, he emphasized the importance of selecting appropriate communication platforms based on the message. Rhee expressed openness to potential opportunities abroad while currently planning to remain in Korea.
