More than 11.55 lakh individuals in Mizoram have been included in the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS), offering free and quality healthcare, as per health officials. The MUHCS governing body, led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, recently assessed the scheme’s progress and future plans. Chief Minister Lalduhoma commended Health Minister Lalrinpuii and MUHCS officials for their dedicated efforts, which have boosted public trust in government healthcare services.
Health officials reported that the scheme currently covers over 2.88 lakh families, totaling around 11.55 lakh beneficiaries, including general households, pensioners, government workers, and those under the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). In the ongoing year (2026-27), approximately 29% of enrolled families have filed medical claims, accounting for about 7% of the total beneficiaries. The average approved payout per patient is Rs 15,106.
A significant number of patients are opting for treatment in government hospitals, which handle about 70% of processed claims. However, private hospitals see more high-value claims, particularly for critical conditions. The meeting highlighted the need to reinforce government healthcare facilities and ensure that manageable cases are treated in government or approved centers whenever feasible.
Financially, the scheme has received around Rs 154 crore for the current year, with an expected Rs 48 crore more. Presently, 83,682 claims worth approximately Rs 126 crore have been processed, while about Rs 38 crore in claims are under review and will be settled soon. Despite the 30-day payment provision to approved hospitals, the state government is releasing funds weekly to prevent delays.
To enhance implementation in the upcoming fiscal year, the governing body has sanctioned measures to streamline operations, set up a pharmaceutical depot for affordable medicines, and implement safeguards against duplicate benefits. The meeting was attended by Chief Minister’s Advisor T.B.C. Lalvenchhunga and other governing body members.
