More than 1100 vehicles were set on fire and over 500 individuals were detained across France during the New Year’s Eve celebrations, as per the country’s Interior Ministry. The ministry emphasized that law enforcement acted swiftly in response to violence or vandalism, resulting in 505 arrests and 403 individuals taken into custody. Additionally, a significant number of defense measures were implemented, with 1,262 interventions by internal security forces.
Millions of French citizens gathered to welcome 2026 on New Year’s Eve, with the ministry ensuring security measures were in place nationwide. In Paris, over a million people congregated on the Champs-Elysees to witness fireworks and ring in the New Year, while other areas like Trocadero and Champ de Mars were also bustling. The ministry reported a relatively peaceful night in various regions compared to the previous year, with fewer incidents of urban violence and attacks on law enforcement.
The police and gendarmerie seized a total of 96,000 mortars by Wednesday evening to prevent their misuse during festivities or as weapons against law enforcement. Unfortunately, the improper use of mortars led to severe injuries, including severed fingers and hands, and facial wounds. The statement highlighted specific cases of injuries in different departments, underscoring the dangers associated with such activities.
