As part of a special weekend drive, authorities in Hyderabad and Cyberabad Police Commissionerates nabbed 787 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol. In Hyderabad, 506 drivers were apprehended, while Cyberabad Traffic Police caught 281 offenders. The drive aimed to enhance road safety by cracking down on drunken driving.
During the two-day special drive on February 27 and 28, Hyderabad Traffic Police targeted drivers under the influence of alcohol, resulting in the apprehension of 506 individuals. Among them, there were 401 two-wheeler riders, 47 three-wheeler drivers, and 57 four-wheeler and other vehicle drivers. Offenders were classified based on their Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels.
Authorities categorized offenders based on their BAC levels, with 104 individuals having levels between 35 mg/100 ml to 50 mg/100 ml. The police registered cases against 214 individuals with BAC levels ranging from 51 to 100, 105 cases for BAC levels of 101-150, and 43 cases for BAC levels ranging from 151-200. Additionally, 24 offenders had BAC levels from 201 to 250, six with levels of 251-300, and 10 cases for levels exceeding 300.
The Joint Commissioner of Police emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards drunk driving violations and assured that the special drive would persist. Commuters were urged to cooperate with traffic police to ensure road safety. Cyberabad Traffic Police also conducted a special enforcement drive, apprehending 281 offenders over the weekend, with the majority riding two-wheelers.
In the last week of February, a total of 218 drunk driving cases were resolved in courts, resulting in various penalties for the offenders. Cyberabad Police reiterated the severity of driving under the influence of alcohol, warning that individuals causing fatal accidents in an inebriated state could face serious legal consequences under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
