More than 81% of eligible voters, totaling 9,62,697, participated in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections held across all eight districts of the state. The TTAADC, a 30-member council, holds strategic importance as it governs nearly 70% of Tripura’s geographical area, making it a key political body next to the state Assembly. Officials from the State Election Commission reported the high voter turnout by the end of polling.
An official from the State Election Commission mentioned that the voter turnout percentage might slightly increase as reports from all 1,257 polling stations are compiled. Despite minor clashes in some districts, overall, the elections were relatively peaceful with no major disturbances reported. Tribal men and women, donned in traditional attire, queued up early at polling stations, leading to extended voting hours in some places due to the large turnout.
The TTAADC elections, marked by a month-long intense campaign and sporadic clashes, are anticipated to have a significant impact on Tripura’s political landscape. With a total of 173 candidates, including eight women, vying for positions, the electoral contest involves national parties like BJP, Left Front, and Congress, along with regional parties like Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT). Security measures were robust, with over 13,500 Central and state security personnel deployed across constituencies to ensure peaceful polling.
