In Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, a paddy procurement center’s in-charge, Gangadhar Jagat, was apprehended by the district police for allegedly embezzling 3,742 quintals of paddy meant for farmers. The scam, amounting to ₹1.16 crores, has caused a stir in co-operative societies, administrative circles, and political circles in the state. Discrepancies in documented paddy stock led to the discovery of the theft.
Following a complaint lodged by Usat Kumar Pradhan, a shortage of 3,742 quintals of coarse paddy was revealed during a physical verification at the Bamhani Paddy Procurement Center. The accused in charge reportedly stole paddy sacks over time, leading to a significant difference between the procured and actual stock. Legal action has been taken, with the accused remanded to judicial custody.
Acting on directives to combat economic crimes and corruption, Mahasamund District Police are investigating the case further to uncover any additional individuals involved in the scam. Gangadhar Jagat, the primary suspect, has confessed to the crime during interrogation and has been arrested based on substantial evidence.
