Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla has written an open letter to French footballer Kylian Mbappe, seeking a public apology and hinting at legal action due to alleged “gender-based violence.” This action was triggered by Mbappe’s criticism of the senator after her racist remarks following Paraguay’s loss to France in the World Cup. In her response, Senator Amarilla acknowledged her initial insults but claimed she deleted them upon realizing her mistake.
In her letter shared on social media, Senator Amarilla explained that her comments were made in the heat of the moment and were later regretted. She emphasized her mixed heritage and expressed remorse for responding with insults similar to those she abhors. The senator demanded that Mbappe retract his statements and apologize, asserting that his words attacked her dignity as a woman and political representative.
Senator Amarilla strongly objected to Mbappe’s characterization of her as a “despicable woman” and unworthy of her position. She insisted on an immediate retraction and warned of potential legal action, citing an assault on her dignity as a woman and political figure. The senator urged Mbappe to apologize and retract his statements, highlighting that she was elected by the people of Paraguay and deserved respect.
French President Emmanuel Macron and FIFA President Gianni Infantino have voiced support for Mbappe following the racist abuse from Senator Amarilla. Macron condemned the racist comments and expressed solidarity with Mbappe, emphasizing the values of dignity, respect, and fraternity. Infantino also denounced the remarks, calling for collective action to combat racism and stand with the French footballer.
