Hollywood actor Patrick Dempsey revealed that he seriously thought about running for Senate in Maine following sexual assault allegations against the Democratic nominee Graham Platner. However, Dempsey decided against it, believing someone else would be better suited for the role. In an op-ed for the Portland Press Herald, Dempsey expressed his love for Maine and concern for the country’s direction.
Dempsey emphasized that while he finds public service honorable, he concluded that he could make a more significant impact through his existing life. With Democrats now seeking a replacement nominee to challenge Republican incumbent Susan Collins, Dempsey stressed the importance of this period for Maine. He expressed hope for a new candidate who can bring a fresh approach to governance.
According to reports, Platner announced the suspension of his campaign operations in a video on social media. He clarified that this decision was not solely due to the allegations but also because of challenges faced in the political landscape. Platner emphasized the need for true democracy and urged that the upcoming senatorial candidate for Maine should truly represent the will and values of the state’s residents.
