As unrest escalates in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), a petition has been submitted to the British Parliament, calling on the UK government to express concerns to Pakistani authorities regarding alleged human rights violations and communication constraints in the region. The petition highlights the ongoing turmoil in PoK, where numerous civilians have reportedly suffered casualties and injuries at the hands of Pakistani forces, amidst a state of blockade, curfew, and communication blackout. Reports indicate that residents of PoK have encountered limitations on communication services, affecting their ability to connect with families, including those residing abroad.
The petition emphasizes the significance of access to communication and information for various aspects such as education, livelihoods, community engagement, and peaceful expression of concerns. It urges the UK government to engage with Pakistan and advocate for the safeguarding of human rights, freedom of expression, and access to communication services in PoK. Over the weekend, members of the Kashmiri diaspora in the UK staged a protest outside the Pakistan High Commission in London, condemning the violent actions of Pakistani forces in PoK and demanding the restoration of human rights in the region.
In a show of solidarity, the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) organized a large demonstration in London, denouncing what they termed as the “genocide of innocent Kashmiris” and sending a strong message against the use of force by Pakistani authorities to suppress the people’s movement. The JAAC reiterated their support for Kashmiri brethren and pledged to continue resisting those who seek to oppress them. Additionally, the UK chapter of Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party reported that overseas Kashmiris participated in a significant march in London to protest the alleged brutality of state forces in PoK and to demand the reinstatement of human rights.
