Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri emphasized the significant progress in biofuels showcased at India Energy Week 2026. The Biofuels Zone demonstrates the country’s large-scale conversion of waste into clean energy. With 133 CBG plants already operational, having a capacity of 926 TPD and availability at 410 retail outlets, India’s CBG ecosystem is rapidly expanding to enhance energy security and sustainability.
Moreover, an additional 83 CBG plants are currently under construction, which will increase the capacity by around 700 TPD. These plants utilize organic waste like agricultural residue to produce compressed biogas and organic manure. The initiative aims to reduce pollution and lessen import dependency, offering a renewable fuel with a high methane content of over 90-95%, serving as a green alternative to CNG in vehicles and industries.
The CBG plants play a crucial role in converting organic waste, including agricultural residue, cattle dung, municipal solid waste, and sugarcane press mud, into purified, compressed methane. This process, supported by the SATAT scheme, aids in decreasing pollution, cutting import reliance, and promoting waste-to-energy solutions. CBG, with calorific value similar to CNG, is suitable for various applications like automotive, industrial, and commercial use, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and increased rural incomes.
Furthermore, these plants generate high-quality organic manure as a byproduct, which can be utilized in farms to enhance crop yields. Launched on October 1, 2018, the SATAT scheme targets the establishment of 5,000 CBG plants nationwide, emphasizing responsible waste management and pollution reduction.
India Energy Week 2026, a premier energy exhibition and conference held in Goa from January 27 to 30, has attracted over 75,000 energy professionals and 700 exhibitors from 120 countries. The event underscores India’s efforts to balance energy access with decarbonization objectives, fostering discussions on secure, sustainable, and affordable energy through strategic investments, innovative technologies, and global partnerships.
