PGIMER in Chandigarh has established a vigilance team to enhance patient safety and ensure transparency within the institute. This move aims to prevent the exploitation of patients and their attendants on the premises, given the high daily footfall of 35,000-40,000 individuals. The initiative focuses on protecting vulnerable groups, especially those from economically weaker and less literate backgrounds, from fraud and extortion.
The vigilance team, led by a security officer and comprising five security personnel, will operate under the Senior Administrative Officer (Vigilance). The team’s strategy includes discreet operations, plain-clothes monitoring, and intelligence-based checks to swiftly address any malpractices. It is empowered to tackle unauthorized activities, overcharging, and deceptive practices that may harm patients or their attendants.
In a statement, PGI Director Prof Vivek Lal emphasized the institution’s commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all visitors. The team’s primary objective is to uphold integrity, provide patient-centric services, and promptly address any exploitation within the PGIMER campus. This measure is part of a broader effort to maintain institutional credibility and safeguard individuals seeking care at the facility.
