Philosopher Acharya Prashant and Professor Jonathan Birch engaged in a public dialogue on animal consciousness and the environment at the London School of Economics. The event, part of London Climate Action Week, attracted students, researchers, faculty, and the public. Professor Birch, Director of LSE’s Jeremy Coller Centre for Animal Sentience, highlighted the convergence between scientific findings and Indian philosophical traditions.
The dialogue explored topics such as the philosophical foundations of sentience, legislation limits, and consumption ethics. Acharya Prashant emphasized the need for a shift in human intent rather than just scientific proof. He likened current approaches to crises to addressing a drunk driver without addressing the drunkenness itself. The discussion also delved into the effectiveness of animal welfare laws in driving lasting change.
Acharya Prashant and Professor Birch, both vegans, discussed the distinction between veganism as an ideology and a natural outcome of understanding. They also touched on artificial intelligence, questioning the potential for machine consciousness. The session extended beyond its scheduled time due to audience engagement in the Q&A round. Acharya Prashant emphasized the importance of self-inquiry in addressing crises and the need to go beyond external measures to correct underlying issues.
